Why is a dot peen printer the best method for required regulatory pipe, cable or valve band marking?
A dot peen printer is often one of the best methods for marking stainless-steel pipe or cable banding used for regulatory identification because it produces a permanent, mechanically engraved mark without relying on ink, labels or coatings.
The main advantages are:
- Permanent and durable marking. Dot peen physically indents the metal. The identification remains readable long term despite exposure to water, UV, oil, chemicals, abrasion, dirt and temperature cycles.
- Works well on stainless-steel banding. Stainless banding is commonly chosen because of its corrosion resistance. Dot peening marks the banding directly without adding another material that may deteriorate before the band itself does.
- Good regulatory traceability. Serial numbers, asset IDs, cable numbers, circuit references, service information, inspection data, and other required identifiers can be permanently tied to the installed asset. Custom branding can also be included with the DotMarkPro™ 1000.
- High legibility over the life of the installation. Properly controlled dot depth and character size create markings that remain identifiable even after years of service.
- Repeatable and automated. A dot peen printer can generate consistent character size, spacing, depth and formatting, reducing the variability associated with hand stamping.
- Supports variable information. Unlike pre-embossed tags, a dot peen system can automatically change tag numbers, cable IDs, sequence numbers, or other data from one band to the next.
- No consumables such as ink or ribbon. This lowers operating complexity and eliminates the possibility that the marking medium itself is incompatible with the environment.
- Less risk of losing identification. With adhesive labels, the regulatory information disappears if the label separates from the band. With dot peen, the band and the identification are effectively one component.
How Does Dot Peen printing compare to Laser Marking?
Any laser marking can be accidentally painted over so all information is lost, and grease, grime or errant chemicals can remove or permanently cover the lasered ID. Also, sun light over time has a negative effect on laser information, causing it to fade.
Compared with laser marking, dot peen is best when deep mechanical marking is preferred, when surface contamination is possible or when the cost and safety controls associated with a laser system aren’t justified.
